How to Choose the Perfect Paper for Your Promotional Materials

A practical guide to understanding the weight, finish, and type of paper that maximizes your visual impact.

Choosing the right paper can turn a good design into a memorable material.

In the world of printing, design is only half the story. The quality, texture, and weight of the paper it's printed on play an equally crucial role in the final perception of your brand.

1. Weight (Grammage) – More Than Just a Feeling

Paper weight, measured in grams per square meter (gsm), determines the feeling of solidity. For business cards, we recommend a grammage between 300-350 gsm for professional rigidity. Flyers work excellently between 135-170 gsm, offering enough strength for handling without being too heavy. Posters for indoor use can use 150-200 gsm, while those for outdoor use require special, laminated materials.

2. Surface Finish – Glossy vs. Matte

This is where your material's character is decided. A glossy finish (with lamination) accentuates colors, making them more vibrant and offering a premium feel. It's ideal for business cards of dynamic brands or for brochure covers. A matte finish (without lamination) offers a sophisticated, elegant aesthetic that doesn't shine and is easier to read under bright lights. It's a classic choice for corporate materials or for projects that convey seriousness.

Tip from the typographer:

For a design with a lot of black text on a white background, always choose matte paper. It reduces eye strain and eliminates annoying glare. For photos or impactful images, glossy paper is the queen.

3. Texture – The Touch That Speaks

Paper is not only seen, it's also felt. A smooth texture is the standard for most digital printing, offering a perfect surface for fine details. Paper with a laid or linen texture immediately conveys a sense of craftsmanship, of superior quality, being perfect for invitations, announcements, or elite branding materials.

4. Type of Paper – From Offset to Recycled

  • Offset Paper: The most common, versatile, and cost-effective. Good for almost anything, from internal documents to flyers.
  • Coated Paper: Available in glossy or matte, it has a layer that improves color fidelity. Our choice for advertising projects.
  • Recycled Paper: Conveys a strong ecological message. It has a slightly cream color and a distinctive texture. Perfect for companies with sustainability values.
